History

AquaSensing was founded in 2019 at the University of Waterloo with the goal of making leak-sensing more environmentally friendly.

Our founders have experience starting and scaling successful companies and have published hundreds of papers and authored dozens of patents. The team currently consists of over a dozen technical developers and is growing fast. We have engineering experience across Canada, the US and China.

Norman Zhou
Norman Zhou

Professor Norman Zhou is a globally recognized leader in materials science and nanotechnology, inducted into the Royal Society of Canada and recognized by the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Nanotechnology. He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications with over 28,000 citations and is the founder of Smarter Alloy. At AquaSensing, he leads the company’s technology, research, and commercialization strategy.

George Shaker
George Shaker

Professor George Shaker is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer in wireless IoT and Director of the Wireless Sensors and Devices Laboratory at the University of Waterloo. His expertise spans wireless sensing, IoT, communications, and energy-harvesting technologies. At AquaSensing, he leads the development of the company’s wireless sensing and connectivity platforms.
